Description jackflap 2008-02-28 10:53:01 UTC
When using Tools->Word Count, the word count doesn't bring up a count excluding
the footnotes.

Since most organisations that request documents to adhere to a certain
word-count don't consider footnotes to be part of the document count, the
current behaviour is very unintuitive.

Simply adding 'Words excluding footnotes:' and 'Characters excluding footnotes:'
values under the 'Whole Document' section in the Word Count dialog would solve
this problem.

Reassigned to SBA.

Good idea if "most organisations" (meaning "not all") use footnotes as notes (=
information *about* the document are not *part of* the document).

As a translator, I also translate footnotes and I am paid by word! :)

So please give both counts: with/without footmotes!

BTW: it's an enhancemznt, not a defect.

That depends. How does Microsoft Word count footnotes? The OOo implementation
should aim to duplicate the Word way of doing things.

See issue 80815 for more word count joy.

@foobard: that does NOT depend. Of course, a lot of companies use Microsoft as
reference. And only because of this *fact* we should align on MS-Word.

But if MS-Word (not tested yet and I don't use it) exculdes footnotes because...
it just doesn't do it, I don't care! I translated footnotes too, I have to be
payed for this!

My assumption:
- Footnote count may not make sense for thesis and college work where they are
explicitly excluded from the word count by the teaching staff.
- Footnote count makes sense when I have to bill a company for a document I have
 translated and that contains footnotes.

That's why: Please show both counts - with and without footnotes.

Idea: would it make sense to add an option to the character/paragraph styles:
"[X] include in word count"
- Default: checked
?

to the best of my knowledge MS Word allows you to count words both with and
without footnotes.

The implementation of this feature (menus, options) should mirror MS Word's.

I've attached a screenshot showing how MS Word deals with header/footer content
in the word count msgbox. Tick the box if you want to include header/footer
content; untick if you only want to count body text. Sensible, and pleases everyone.

So I'm glad to see we say the same :)
-> with and without footnotes.

Thanks again for helping us with the dreaded word count.
I really would like not to procrastinate that and so I change the target to 3.x.
This will allow to include it into the following project reviews.

It would be very useful indeed.
One question : a lot of issues claims for the enhancement of word count (e.g.
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=14050,
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=78963,
http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=10356). Souldn't we gather them
in the same "dependency tree" ? Sorry if this question is stupid : i'm a new user.
