Description Olaf Felka 2008-03-03 13:34:45 UTC
- specification section 1.5: Application Background
- gradient background shown inside the backing window should also be shown for
document backgrounds as e.g in writer
- the background for writer documents isn't gradient in cws aquavcl05
Comment 1 philipp.lohmann 2008-03-03 14:01:07 UTC
That's because the spec was changed after the fact. We'll do this in a followup
CWS since it is not translation relevant an the freeze draws near.

pl->fl: do we want this for 3.0 or 3.1 ? Should the gradient be based on the
system colors as the current background is (e.g. one could light up and darken
the color to get the two colors for the gradient) ?
Comment 3 frank.loehmann 2008-04-16 14:59:05 UTC
If possible for OOo 3.0, to have a consistent look. The gradient should be the
same shown in the backing of the StartCenter. Draw will stay with the white
background shown today, because this area is used for constructing drawing elements.

AW and AF both think this is a bad idea for applications. Since we're talking
about their apps, I think I will not implement this until there is consensus.

FL->MBA: What is your optinion on that issue? At least Writer's look could be
improved using the new start-center background.
Comment 8 Mathias_Bauer 2008-06-12 10:56:32 UTC
I'm not sure if this is an improvement. At least I hesitate to do such a change
in a hurry.
Comment 9 Armin Le Grand 2008-06-12 11:29:41 UTC
AW: I strongly reccomend not to do this. In software ergonomy, detroying user's
imagination is a big no-no. Up to now our users have the imagination that the
app window shows a part of a 'Desktop' which they can change in scrolling and
zooming. This imagination is supported by the background being single-colored.
When excanging with a static gradient, suddenly only the page and it's content
moves, but the desk behind it stays still -> destroys user's expectations.
If You really have to change the background, it has to scroll and zoom with the
documents. For gradients this means potentially huge fields, e.g. SW document
with 100ds of pages. Since today's displays only have 256 steps per color
channel, the gradient would be obsolete anyways.
BTW: I have never seen an application doing this (for good reasons, if You ask me).

I disagree with AW here, under the assumption that we talk about very subtle
gradients. Not excessive gradients.
Other applications use them for some years now and they don't seem to cost
performance anywhere and they just give a subtle fresh look and do not interfere
From my opinion a gradient between the same color with a subtle luminance
difference that does not scroll nor zoom would be a nice to have...

New target: 3.1
Comment 12 frank.loehmann 2009-04-16 11:56:08 UTC
Adjust target.

Branch-date (feature- and code-freeze) for OOo 3.2 is nearly done. Therefore I
change the target of this issue to OOo 3.x. If you think it is a stopper for OOo
3.2 please change the target back.
