Description wolframgarten 2008-04-10 11:03:38 UTC
When saving a file as template using File/Templates/save it shows the templates
name under file/properties/template when a new file is created using this template.
When saving the template using File/Save As, selecting .otp the templates name
is not shown under file/properties/template when a new file is created using
this template.

This is by intent; the "template name" field is meant to be used for templates
imported into our template component only. Only these templates can be found by
their "logical" name. How else should a document find its template if it only
has the logical name but doesn't know to which template this name belongs?

Other templates could be referenced by their file name though. But we thought
that these names are too volatile to use them. We had this feature in very old
versions of StarOffice but removed it because it was confusing (IIRC it was
never available in OOo).

I'm unsure if we should change that or not. I tend to "WONTFIX" but will give UX
a say in that. So someone (perhaps the submitter ;-)) could bring this up on the
UX mailing list.

In any case this would be an enhancement, not a defect.

As this is not an Impress issue I take it over.

The approach of differentiating between the file name and file title in OO templates is very confusing ...

... and time consuming: I spent two hours today to figure why - again - a template I saved did not show in the OO Template directory when creating a new document with a template.

If this is by design - please make it understandable and fool proof.

By the way,
- when saving *two* OO templates with the *same file "descriptor"*
- but of course with two different file names f1.ott f2.ott,
- OO shows just one of the files!!! This definitely is a mistake.

In other words, Keep It Simple and Straighforward: *just use the (logical) file name as template name.

I'm using MS Word since its onset and last in its 2002 version. I guess that MS Word list it templates still by file name.

Consider, if a calculate my hourly rate at $60, I'd better buy MSOffice Home Edition ....

A very simple wisdom: OO should not be "better" than MS Word but as "user compatible" as possible to facilitate user migration from MS to OO ... is that not what we want?
