Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 88714
Find & Replace: keep the "More Options" dialog open when item is selected
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:31:14 UTC
If you use the "Find & Replace" dialog and if you select an item of "More Options" (backwards, regular expressions, etc.), next time you open the "F&R" dialog the "More Options" part will be not shown - but the item will be still selected. It is not visible to the user that the "More Options" item is still selected, so it can (and will) be forgotten. Therefore the user can't find what s/he wants and doesn't know why. Suggestion: Keep the whole "Find & Replace" dialog open as long as an item of the "More Options" part is selected. This issue occurs in all applications.
Set target.
TM->requirements: please have a look
Please, can someone change the status to NEW? This issue has been accepted by fl and has a (vague) target milestone.
assigned to requirements -> New
Is there any data from the User Feedback Program since the release of OOo 3.1 with that we can see how many people are using the checkboxes in the "Find & Replace" dialog? It would be interesting to see how often this options are used: only whole cells, backwards, only in selection. I never used "Only whole cells" (don't know the right English string, in German it's "Nur ganze Zellen"), but I need "Only in selection" often in Calc and "Backwards" very often in all applications. Therefore my second suggestion would be: Move down the "Only whole cells" checkbox to the "More options" part of the dialog and move up both "Only in selection" and "Backwards" to the always visible part of the dialog. This would prevent most cases of not remembering a personal setting in later searches.
really a nasty usability problem, IMO
I mailed to discuss@ux for opinions on this.
Liz->CD: Please do not move any elements around, only fix this issue by having the lower section be open when there is an option marked there. This will represent an increase in usability and clarity for the users, who should be reminded that they marked a particular option the last time they did a search and therefore might want to change it to find the desired results in the new Search. Thank you!
cd: We missed the feature freeze date for OOo 3.3 with this issue. I have to move the issue to the next release. If you believe that this issue should be handled as a showstopper for OOo3.3 please nominate it accordingly in the releases mailing list.
Hi Carsten, thanks for your heads up - somewhere in my memory I knew this issue is still open. But pls no showstopper ;-) What is more: the thread on discuss@ux was quite vivant, but AFAIR, no outcome formulated. So that has to be looked after to.
