Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 89081
inconsistent centering in fraction
Last modified: 2013-08-07 14:54:29 UTC
Open FracCent.odt Why is the denominator centered in A, but not in B? Sure, I can force centering with alignc, as in C, but the spontaneous centering done in A should be the default. May be related to, but is not the same as, issue 56601.

In B you should remove "" around Sin to obtain function sin which is centered. "Sin" is text and left aligned.
Yes, text is always left aligned... MRU->TL: I do not think, that it makes sense to have something not centered in a fraction though it is declared as text.
I'm a bit heitent to change this because it should have been stated elsewhere in the documentation that an line/expression(?) will always be left aligned if it starts with a text (i.e. a string quoted with " chars)... Thus the documentation needs to be checked about this as well. And as usual with these kind of changes we will changes the layout of already existing documents that make use of the current behavior. Don't know if there are much of them... Is it really what we want to do? TL->tab: Question out of curiosity: why are you using 'sin' with a capital first letter? I can't remember to have ever seen a book or publication about mathematics that wrote it that way... (it's some years since though ;-)
I agree with MRU: 'I do not think, that it makes sense...' Look at FracCntr.odt: One does not need to be a financial expert to prefer B over A. Centering should be the general default, for any type --variable, number, text,... Those who prefer left alignment can always use alignl.

This nasty behavior (of non-centering quoted text in fractions) is still present at OO3.1. I submitted several additional examples and arguing from scientific presentations on the (closed) issue #102504 and hope this will be corrected soon.
