Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 89871
Printer warnings - paper size & paper orientation options should be on by default
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:31:14 UTC
When printing to a printer that is currently set to print landscape orientation, the orientation setting is ignored by Calc. To actually set landscape orientation, the user must navigate to Format -> Page ... -> Page and check the Landscape box. It has been suggested that Calc follow the printer's setting just as other similar products do. I, however, see a very likely conflict if there are two different places from which to draw this setting. Therefore, I would suggest instead that Calc simply warn the user that the printer's Landscape option will be ignored and direct them to the Page Layout dialog for OOo's Landscape checkbox. This warning box could have a Continue and a Cancel button, along with a "Do not show this warning again" checkbox. Ian
I doubt that printer settings should be taken over by OOo, I prefer that the printer uses the document settings as the current behaviour works. @walker_643: Pls. specify your Platform, OS, printer and printer driver! It's rally only a Speradsheet problem for you, not also in DRAW, WRITER? Pls. contribute names of "similar products" mentioned in your report! Can you contribute any HELP text or other document that describes the behaviour as desired in your report?
This was an issue at my office, so I'm afraid some of the details are going to have to wait until Tuesday. From memory, I can tell you this: There were two machines involved in my experience. One was an amd64 with 32-bit XP connected directly to an HP printer (don't remember exact model or driver version). The other machine was a P4 with 32-bit Ubuntu 7.10 and with CUPS connect via SMB to the HP printer on first machine. I realized shortly after I posted this issue that I should have tested on other OOo components. I will get you the missing details on Tuesday. @rainerbielefeld: You and I are in agreement, I think, that it is best if "the printer uses the document settings as the current behaviour works". Though, I don't understand what you're implying when you say you "doubt that printer settings should be taken over by OOo". The current behavior is for the printer to use the document settings, and for the program to ignore the printer settings (at least the Landscape option). What I am asking for is an acknowledgment from the program to the user that this is intended behavior along with a pointer to the correct place to change the setting. This is simply to prevent them from scratching themselves bald before resorting to Google to figure out why they can't print the damn thing in landscape mode... as I did. Again, more details will follow on Tuesday. Ian
First, a correction: The Linux machine is running Ubuntu Hardy 8.04, not Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10. The promised details: Printer: HP DeskJet 990Cse Connected via USB to XP machine Linux: (All are most recent Ubuntu Hardy packages) CUPS 1.3.7 hpijs 2.8.2 hplip 2.8.2 foomatic 3.0.2 foomatic-db 20080211 XP: SP2 with all current hotfixes/update from MS Driver file versions: HPFUD50/HPFUI50/HPF900AL is 5.1, UNIRES is 6.0 I have confirmed that this is an issue with other OOo products in addition to Calc. For example, if I open a new, blank Writer doc, enter "Testing 1 2 3", select File, Print, Properties, select the Landscape option, then print the document, the Landscape setting is ignored. Perhaps this issue should be moved into a different category?? It is worth noting that the same procedure under Notepad correctly yields landscape output.
Try going to Tools - Options - OpenOffice.org - Print - Printer warnings, and check the "Paper size" and "Paper orientation" check boxes. Then try changing the paper orientation from the Printer settings dialog. Will that change anything?
You got it, kohei. With that option enabled, when the user clicks the Print button, OOo will ask if the document's settings should be sync'd to the printer's settings. If the user answer "Yes", the document is printed correctly. So... my feature request is now only this: Enable that behaviour by default. Is there any reason not to? Cheers, kohei. Ian
Glad it worked, Ian. :-) Let me confirm the issue & change the title to something more appropriate since the nature of the request has changed.
I'm going to assign this to Frank (fl) since I believe this is mostly a usability issue.
Printing in Calc is on our UX list for a 3.x release.
