Description retro83 2008-05-29 13:40:08 UTC
Using the Aqua OO.o 3.0 beta on OSX 10.5.3, the scrolling screen refresh rate is
poor.

The document moves the correct distance when scrolled by the scrollbar or the
mousewheel but the redrawing rate during this operation is slow.

The larger the window, the worse the problem manifests (I would estimate that
the maximised window refreshes at around 3-5FPS whilst scrolling).

System Info:
OSX 10.5.3
Macbook - 2.2GHz C2Duo with 2GB RAM

- Happens in every OpenOffice app.
- Happens in any document (even blank ones - watch the redrawing of the rulers)

DEV300_m21 Intel Leopard (also on a MacBook with maximum RAM and 10.5.3: G'day to a fellow
MacBook user! :) )

I'm not getting any distortion with scrolling, but the update rate is tangibly slow. I think that would be
aggravated with complex graphics. You get noticeable stepping (the redraw steps are distinct, they don't
flow into each other as they should) even with templates like pumpkin.ots .

This slow redraw is a disadvantage, especially on high-end and new machines, where users will be used
to graphics updating seamlessly.

I downloaded build DEV300_m23 and tested it against NeoOffice 2.2.4.

Using the internal touchpad 'two finger' scrolling, NeoOffice is vastly smoother than OOo.

I'm not sure what else I can try, disabling beam-sync makes no difference, neither does disabling font
smoothing.

Confirm issue on iMac (Intel 2Core 2.16 GHz, 1 GB 667 MHz Ram) Tiger with OOo
Aqua 3.0.0 beta-2

• Scrolling below or above actually shown screen is normal with mouse scrolling
wheel or dragging in the scroll bar.
• Moving the screen down or up gets confusingly slow (4"-5") when using the
single or double arrows (under the scroll bar), when using the cursor keys, or
when editing text at the edge of the screen.

No graphics or complex formatting in sight: only simple text in a 20 page doc.

Changing to Platform/OS to all, because this slow redraw also happens on Linux.
If this should be a separate bug for Linux then please let me know, but it
sounds like it isn't Mac specific.

Its especially noticeable in Calc if the sheet is selected/highlighted and then
you pull on the scrollbar down it refreshes maybe a couple times per second,
very noticeable redraw.
