Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 91729
Select JRE on install of Java-based extension
Last modified: 2013-07-30 02:37:46 UTC
OOo doesn't select JRE automatically, even if it's the only JVM on the machine and the user installs an extension that requires Java. I consider it a defect because I get questions from people that don't know they should enable this option and complain that the extension is dysfunctional. In this case, OOo should silently select the only Java as the user definitely wants to use Java for the extension being installed. For maximum transparency, a new dialog may be introduced, saying: "You are installing an extension that requires Java. Do you want to activate Java Runtime Environment in OpenOffice.org? Without it, the extension will not work." Extensions lack the possibility of specifying Java dependency (and version number) but this is another issue.

@ jl: Please have a look.
Using a JRE happens transparently to the user (unless it was deliberately switched off in options|java. On Unix a JRE is always selected, this is done by the soffice script. On Windows the JRE is selected on demand. That is, if a service is created that needs Java, then a JRE is being searched and the VM is created. What one could do is warn users when they switch of the use of java. The warning should state cleary that some function / extensions will not work anymore. @bh: Please specify the warning.
