Description andthebrain 2008-07-22 02:11:34 UTC

I am writing my thesis in OpenOffice (2.4.1 and 3.0.0 Beta2), and have found a
100% reliable way to have OO writer permanently hang (I have waited up to 8
minutes, and have to kill program with task manager). I have attached a minimal
document which causes this problem.

Steps to reproduce failure:
1. Open attached document (disable macros on load.. I tried writing a macro for
something, but have since deleted them, but it still asks).
2. Move your cursor to the start of the main line of text inside the frame.
3. Type "a a a a a a a a " till the line exceeds the width of the page. For me,
the program then locks up totally.

I have found that by deleting the formula (which is actually a real formula for
my thesis), the problem goes away. Also, if I change the formula to be just "a",
it also goes away. Therefore I suspect there is some interaction between the
formula and the line wrap. There could also be an issue with the frame it is in.

My setup is:
- OpenOffice 2.4.1 and 3.0.0 Beta2
- Windows XP Pro [5.1.2600]
- 4Ghz Intel P4 with hyperthreading.
- 3gig ram.
- Only one OpenOffice document open at the time.
- Language: English.
- Kaspersky Internet Security, updated daily.

Also, the same failure occurs on my laptop running OO2.4.1. It's a 2Ghz Toshiba
G30 running Windows XP Pro.

Thank you for any help you can offer!

As a workaround, enlarge the frame manually at its bottom border before you
create a line break inside it. It seems, that the ojbect at the bottom blocks an
automatic size correction of the frame in this case.

MRU->OD: having an object at the bottom of the frame (like in the attachment),
writer will be caught in a loop when this frame should adapt its autosize when
e.g. creating a line break in it.

I have also had OO (2.4.1, but 3.0.0 would likely do the same) hang when
switching from web-layout to print-layout, or when loading the document in
web-layout if it tried to redraw the screen during load. (I worked around this
by covering the screen with another window when the document was loading).

I have just now switched all frames from automatic sizing to fixed size (for
both height and width) and it seems to change from web-layout to print-layout OK.

This layout-loop already occurs in OOo 2.0.

Because target OOo 3.0.1 is reserved for serious defects introduced in OOo 3.0 I
decided to target this issue to OOo 3.1.
Comment 5 Oliver-Rainer Wittmann 2008-10-01 07:55:45 UTC
Due to limited resources re-target to next major release OOo 3.2
Comment 6 Oliver-Rainer Wittmann 2009-07-02 15:29:04 UTC
due to limited resources I have to re-target this issue to OOo 3.x

Reset assigne to the default "".
