Crushing chinese font (mingliu.ttc) in OOO300m2 writer
Last modified: 2009-12-22 13:44:37 UTC
The mingliu.ttc (Microsoft's chinese font) would be crushing or having no bold or italic effect in different zoom size. Just as the attachments ( png ), thanks~

@HDU: have you any idea? Accessing Linux over vnc, I doubt I can really reproduce it. I can reproduce a bad display of the font (especially when bold) to certain zoom factors but all attributes are there at any zoom factor. If you want to check this, I have the 2 MS fonts mingliu.ttc and mingliub.ttc on my "tausch".
Confirmed it in OOo300m9 on WinXP. minhsien0330, thank you for your great work. Li Meiying
@amy2008: what did you reproduce? the bad display of the font or the missing font attributes?
Sorry,Confirmed it in OOo300m9 on Ubuntu. >@amy2008: what did you reproduce? the bad display of the font or the missing >font attributes? I opened the attachment mingliu_problem.odt Font attributes (bold or italic) missed when zooming in 105%,115%... Please check it once more. Sorry for my late reply again. Li Meiying
Add: Haven't found the bad display of the font. :) Li Meiying

Hi~ amy2008~ I can not download the attachements that you uploaded. Would you rename them (not use "%" in fileanme) and upload again? Thanks a lot~ :)
reminder: I guess this is a combination of the well known Mingliu-Hinting and Freetype problem in combination with FTEmbolden() or a sheared transformation matrix.

Hi minhsien0330 and hdu, Sorry for my carelessness, I have uploaded four new images, would you like checking it again? Li Meiying
Thanks to amy2008, I can download your attachments now. You just met "no bold" and "no bold & italic" in zoom 110% only, and there was no crushing fonts. I tried Openoffice.org 3.0 (English Version), but the crushing problems remain.
Created attachment 57681 [details] ooo 3.0 still show the crushing mingliu.ttc fonts
OOo300m9 in my testing computer is English version too. Maybe, is it something relating to OS (My OS is Ubuntu)? Li Meiying

Hi all~ I found 2 different mingliu.ttc ! One will lead to crushing fonts in OO.o 3.0 Linux version, and the other one won't. Although they had different size, they had the same version number. The mingliu.ttc that lead to crushing font had smaller file size↓(I got them from Win2000 sp4 & WinXP sp2, Traditional chinese version) http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/57801/mingliu-Crushing.jpg The mingliu.ttc that not lead to crushing font had smaller file size↓ http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/57802/mingliu-No_Crushing.jpg Maybe amy2008 use the later mingliu.ttc (with 23400KB) ? :)
@minhsien0330: please send me the "crushing font" by mail mentioning the issue ID in the subject line. Then I'll be able to check if the font is generally defect or if we have a problem with it.

Dear all~ I found a chinese page mention the same crushing problem with mingliu.ttc. http://wiki.debian.org.hk/w/Fonts It said that mingliu.ttc would be crushing without "hinting".
So assuming this is a problem of the font. Not an OOo problem.

To es: I tried Debian version of OOo 3.0 (3.0.0-4), there was not crushing mingliu.ttc problem, no matter what version of mingliu.ttc or kaiu.ttf. But the official OOo 3.0 always had this crushing problem when using kaiu.ttf and specific mingliu.ttc version. So I think there may be somewhat hinting problem of official OOo. Would you reopen this font displaying problem please? Thanks a lot~ Debian OOo-3.0 packages↓ http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=Openoffice.org&searchon=names&suite=experimental§ion=all
Mingliu.ttc is "famous" for abusing the tt-hint system. They are not used as intended for adjusting the outline to the raster display but also for moving strokes around. So this font does not work on systems where autohinting is enabled or where tt-hinting is disabled
