Description Graham Perrin 2008-09-22 15:20:31 UTC
= Expected =

Failure should be accompanied by a description.

= Bug =

Sometimes, no description.

= Environment =

Mac OS X 10.5.5
Intel
MacBook Pro, first generation

Internet connection should be fine here on University of Sussex campus.

If it's relevant: AFAIK a transparent proxy is used.

Issue 91874
Check for update fails

Issue 93035
Help/check for updates does not work

We might distinguish this issue 94174 (from 91874 and from 93035) by the following aspect:

> [failed] _without description_

----

Focusing solely on Mac OS X environments —

(excluding, presumably, panajev (Windows Vista) zdavatz (Gentoo Linux) roger2 and slippi (Windows XP) in those
other Mac OS X-oriented tickets)

— when I think beyond OOO, to

a) update check failures

and/or

b) checks that report themselves as successful, but actually fail to find available updates

— I think of Microsoft Office 2004 and 2008, and of Adobe Reader 8 and 9, and ...

... their failures to work with the .pac proxy auto-configuration file preferred in Mac OS X Network preferences.

AFAIK in these circumstances the only workaround is to

* _not_ rely on a .pac

* configure all proxy settings manually

and AFAIK I find this to be true in at least two environments (University of Brighton) (University of Sussex) where I
work.

A wild guess: is this type of failure, with proxy auto-configuration files, more likely to affect Carbon than Cocoa?

duplicate to issue 91874 ??

> duplicate to issue 91874 ?

Possibly, I recognised that issue on 8th October.

Contributors to 91874 mention *descriptions* for failure.

Here, the failure is without description, see the blank area of first attachment

Symtpom recurs in 3.1.0 RC 1, OOO310m9 (Build:9396).

Again, I wish for a *description* of the failure.

Hi,

Same trouble here! 3.1.1 on Win XP.

In my company, proxy server authentication dialogue is required, due to
autoconfiguration PAC file use.
But, on OOo, I have no authentification dialogue box.

So : no picture import from website, check for updates fails.

Using 3.2.0 on WinXP.

Tried checking for updates today and it failed because the 3.2.1 download is not
yet available for my locale. The dialog displayed is:

Status: checking for an update failed.
Description: <blank>

This could mean anything from PC firewall problem or server down. Only by
manually going to www.openoffice.org is it possible to discover the real
problem. In fact the server is contactable but the file does not exist.

The updater dialog should say something like:

Latest version 3.2.1, download failed.
Error 404 - File not found.

Issue 95975 opened 2008-11-07 is:

> Check for update failure

@ developers

Should 95975 be treated as a duplicate of this issue 94174 and if so, should we change the platform and
OS of this issue?

Here's my problem: "Checking for an update failed." Trying to d/l latest version I'm told to close OpenOffice before the installation can begin. But when I close the program the installation window also closes. When I go back to rekey the update I get the "Checking for an update failed" message.

Using iMac with Leopard 10.6.8; OpenOffice 3.2.1, 000320m18 (Build: 9502).

Tried looking for "Download" to continue the installation but could find no such prompt.

Thanks.

I was getting a similar error using Windows 10, but there was a description. I found that JAVA is required. Since I was using EDGE (does not use JAVA), I believe I was getting the error because JAVA was not running in EDGE. Since it was never being used, I deleted JAVA. Later when I tried using Check for Updates, I got the same error using Firefox. I believe this was also because JAVA was not running, because I had deleted it. If the Check for Updates is modified so that JAVA is no longer required, I believe this will fix the problem I was having.

I captured this screen shot from Little Snitch on 6th October. Maybe not directly relevant but better here than in my trash.

I am having a problem updating to 4.1.7, even with previous versions I noticed that the in-program updater stopped working. The following is the message that is received:

Error reading data from the Internet.
Server error message: .

I have Windows 10 with 64 bit O.S.
Comment 15 Robert W Murphree 2020-02-17 17:11:29 UTC

window with title "check for updates" appears,
status text box::

is there a switch to turn up error reporting or logging?
