Description corigo 2008-10-17 10:47:34 UTC
1. OOo hangs/crashes... whatever
2. I double click the file that I was working on... (I have to get back to work)
3. Document Recovery comes up
4. I recover my file and it opens
5. My file opens again (from the double click in the OS).

I didn't want to open the file twice, I wanted to open it once, but the
Document Recovery, when it interrupts the file open process doesn't recognize
that the file I am attempting to open is the same as the one being recovered.

I've experienced this problem twice now.

The version of OOo I'm using is OOO300m15 (Build:9379) running on Ubuntu 8.10.
It is installed from the "PPA for OpenOffice.org Scribblers" on Launchpad.

This is more than just a nuisance because the two files opened by OOo are
usually NOT THE SAME.

1. The file which is opened through double clicking on the file icon is the
last version explicitly saved by the user.

2. The recovery process opens the version of the file which was saved by OOo for
recovery purposes. This version is usually more recent than the one saved by
the user.

This problem may result in DATA LOSS unless the user is really careful. It is
easy to think that both open documents are the same but looking in
"File->Properties" shows that the modification times are different.

I saw precisely the problem described by lddubeau in the Feb 6, 2009 comment
today on Windows XP Professional SP3 with OOo 3.1.0 Swedish. (There is no 3.1.1
Swedish, so 3.1.0 is the latest stable version for us.) The problem was
exerienced in Calc, after the document (a pretty large one) crashed the
application. By sheer luck, the user continued editing the more recent version
of the document among the two instances open, and no data was lost. But very
clearly, the exact same ods document was open twice in the same operating-system
session with different contents in the separate OOo windows.

I might note that the document was placed on a Microsoft Windows "network
share," in the somewhat unlikely case that it makes a difference.

While googling the bug, I noticed that it was confirmed approximately 9 months
ago for OOo 3.0.1 on Ubuntu. See:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/351035

I find this to be a serious bug, and it is troubling that it is not marked as
fixed. It would be of great benefit if it could be fixed for 3.2.0.

I don't remember to have seen that ever with WIN.

@corigo, lddubeau, ottogie:
Still a problem for you?
Comment 4 corigo 2010-06-18 07:21:05 UTC
Not on 3.2 with win 7. No longer have the original test environment I'm afraid.
Comment 5 corigo 2010-06-18 07:27:11 UTC
Can no longer reproduce
Comment 6 Rainer Bielefeld 2010-06-18 09:27:04 UTC
For DUP reopened

Ottogie's link lead to Issue 100651, what has been reported later, but has more
advanced status.
