Description Unknown 2002-12-01 14:12:34 UTC
Hello.

Well, in http://xml.openoffice.org/xmerge/docbook/ it's stated that "In fact,
sufficient interest in this project should drive requirements for enhancements."

So I'm showing my interest :)

It's also stated, when speaking about the limitations of the actual filter, that
"These are limitations which should be highlighted but are not blockers."

Well, lack of images support is sure a blocker for me. The rest of the
limitations are not, or I can change the filter if needed. But images are beyond
me. ¿What can I do? I could create a directory with the name "<doc-name>_images"
or something like that, put the images there and adapt the references, but that
cannot be done from the filter, I guess, except using external functions,
perhaps, from which I've heard, but never been in contact.

So, is image support being considered? And if not, or not in the near future,
could I get some idea of how to do it myself?

Thanks for all in any case.

Hope it get´s done before 1.1 final release.

I think it is not yet supported.
Please report back, and update the version.

See supported tags (where the images are not supported)
http://xml.openoffice.org/xmerge/docbook/supported_tag_table.html
We need in further versions the support of images.
JSI->requirements: A need for a complete DocBook XML filter.

When talking about image support in XML/XSL based filters like DocBook, its
importent to differentiate between linked and embedded images. Linked images are
not a great problem, because the link to the image source in the document can
just be reused in the result document. Embedded images are another matter and
there isn't a real solution to handle them with plain XSLT, because they are
either embedded base64 encoded in the document which is AFAIK hard to handle
with plain XSLT.
Another possibility is to enhance the XML filtering framework to offer better
support for embedded images that is more XSLT friendly. (e.g. automatic export
of embedded images to some known location)

Currently, I advise to use linked images.

Any progress on this issue? OO was once the shining beacon of hope on round tripping Docbook, but a few critical unsupported tags keep it a nonstarter. Support for embedded images is one of them.
