Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 98952
Shift–Option–Right Arrow (shift-alt-right) extends selection too far
Last modified: 2013-01-29 21:48:39 UTC
Shift–Option–Right Arrow should extend > To the end of the current word, then to the end of the next word In OOoDEVm39 and m41, extension occurs _beyond_ the end of the word (includes white space) The norm is to _not_ include the white space beyond the end of the word. <http://tinyurl.com/apple-hig-ooo-98952> succeeds the TinyURL above. Screen shot <http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/61606/101133.png> (borrowed from issue 101133) shows that the OOo expression is > Select to Word Right I wonder whether OOo tradition differs from the Apple guidelines. Users of Mac OS X expect the selection to reach the end of a word (to *not* extend into trailing white space).
This is an issue across platforms. I use Ooo on Ubuntu and the selection of text is the one feature that constantly drives me bonkers. I also remember it happening on Windows. It seems illogical that, when selecting the word at the end of a line, the selection should extend past the end of the line. This should be a subsequent selection step, or use the Shift-Down combination (which it already does!) This is not just seeking to mimic other commercial packages, but even the known behaviour of most major operating systems and programs like Firefox.

An updated URL for relevant Apple Developer documentation. http://www.openoffice.org/nonav/issues/showattachment.cgi/61606/101133.png not found, I guess it'll turn up somewhere. (Side note: I'm not au fait with relocation of resources following the shift to Apache. No rush :-)
