Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 99769
printing handouts wrong (A4, Mac at least)
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:20:06 UTC
When in layout mode for handouts, I select 2 slides per page. I check all the correct options (I believe) and the result is a handout with 6 slides per page! Both are "standard" handout layouts... See attachments for explanation. (note that I choose "trim", because when I choose "fit", the result is even worse: the 6 pages are printed on a small portion of the page) I believe there are 2 bugs here. Note that I set the page format to A4...
Created attachment 60582 [details] This shows handout layout on mac with a selection of 2 slides per page; print preview (and printing) is wrong: it displays 6 slides per page
Created attachment 60583 [details] If I select fit instead of trim, then it's even worse: only a small area with 6 slides is printed (see next attachment)
Created attachment 60584 [details] When fit is selected then the printed area for handout is wrong, much too small (I checked the margins)
When using the printdialog from OOo (settable under options/General/print dialogs) you can select in the print dialog what you want to print (handout, slides, etc...) and how many slides per page. The native print dialog does not offer this opportunity. The problem is in my opinion that the initial setting in the print dialog is set to 6 slides per page - no matter which layout is selected in the handout view. Reassigned.
Thanks for your comment, wg. Activating the openoffice print dialog indeed gives access to some additional options. But this is pretty confusing and not user-friendly. There is a way, on Mac, to use the native print dialog AND to allow the currently printing application to display a pane with its own options. I have seen this on several occasions (although I can't point to the doc that explains how to do it). Secondly, I believe there is still a bug: the "fit to page" option does not work well - the 2 or 6 small pages are printed on a very reduced portion of the page (it may have to do with US Letter vs A4?...)
You can indeed improve the result by using OOo's own print dialog (by enabling it in Tools->Options->General). Then it is possible to select handout printing and the number of slides per page. Nevertheless, even with adjusting the page format (e.g. A4 paper and margins of 1cm) the printed area uses only a fraction of the paper (effective margin about 4cm). Adjusting the handout's layout (View->Handout Page-> Tasks->Layouts) has no obvious effect on size and position of printed slides on page. Also, the OOo printing dialog shows the slides in horizontal order which is at least confusing (when selecting 2 per page). Using Mac OS native printing dialog is buggy and unusable.
Confirmed under Mac OS X 10.6 Intel with OpenOffice.org 3.1.0
with the new printing dialog you could already select how many slides per handout you like to print. With issue 94055 I also added that you again can choose to use the setting from the handout slide. So setting this issue to duplicate *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 94055 ***
