I am receiving more and more .nps files via email or IZ. I'd like to associate NetBeans as the default viewer for 
these files, and just click on them in the browser or email client and open them. However this does not seem possible 
right now.

Probably there is a missing File Type that would handle these files.

FYI, you can use VisualVM to easily open the snapshots (visualvm --openfile:
http://blogs.sun.com/nbprofiler/entry/new_commandline_options_in_visualvm).
