and was this file closed the moment you closed the project?
I have a Netbeans 8.1 project, which does it every time. I have multi row tabs enabled, one per project. When project is closed and another is still open, documents go into one row. When projects are closed and its file is open from Git changes window, it appears without tab ear (name and closing cross). Created attachment 160002 [details]
