"The export to pdf" function would be placed more intuitively if it w4ere one of
the options in the pull down menu you get with "save as." Right in between,
say, microsoft word and rich text format.

Most people will look there to try to save as a pdf, rather than under the file
dialog under "export as pdf". After all, there are many file formats that we
can save as. Why place pdf in a different spot than the rest?

Absolutely not!

In fact I'd go further than just PDF and say that no file format that
can't offer 100% restoration should not be in the "Save As" but be in
the "Export To" menu.

This includes HTML and maybe some of the popular word processor
formats. If people had to "Export" to create MSWord it would raise the
awareness of both the PDF function and the irreversibility of the save
as action.

There should be 3 functions open/import, save and export.
Export carries the appropriate warning about irreversibility.

though export to pdf should be put in the 'export' category, there
might be some discussion on the lay-out of the file menu; because as i
noticed 1.1 RC3 has 'two' export options:
- Export
- Export as PDF

while both dialogs are the same. I think, though the export to PDF
function is a great function that the file menu should state 'Export'
(and not both Export and Export as PDF)...

(note that when you choose to export as pdf, you still have the option
to export as xhtml in the dropdown menu of Export to PDF dialog menu)
Comment 5 openoffice.org 2005-09-29 19:13:18 UTC
There are still 2 export functions... one especially for PDF, which also offers
the dropdown for xhtml, and a 'normal' export item.

Confirmed with 2.0.2RC1.
To clarify: the general suggestion is that 'Export to PDF' is not necessary as a
seperate menu item. The original reporter suggests that this function is added
to 'Save As'. However, this is against the general UI design as mentioned here
and in Issue 11393. Instead it could be added to the 'Export' function. The
issue Summary has been updated to reflect this and Component changed to Framework.

I personally feel that 'Export to PDF' is just duplicating the function of
'Export'. I would have no problem seeing this menu item removed.
However, in the duplicate Issue 51659, 'mru' states:

QUOTE/ In the File.Export dialog you can have additional filters which can be
added/configured e.g. in Tools.Package manager or Tools.XML Filter settings.
Also this dialog is used in OO Draw to keep the graphic export filters.
This currently works as designed. /QUOTE

I don't follow this argument... The Export dialogue clearly has '.pdf', why have
a second dialogue that repeats this function?

Regards,
Andrew

To grep the issues easier via "requirements" I put the issues currently lying on
my owner to the owner "requirements".
