In the current Search / Replace option it is not possible to search for a word
and then let it Replace while keeping the case. Because it is very common in
documents and spreadsheets to have one word with different case types this would
be a very handy and user friendly enhancement.

I am not surprised to find this issue, but I am very surprised it has not been
confirmed yet. Steps to reproduce the problem:

* Open a Writer document

* Enter the following text.

Hydrated oxides are very important in retaining metals. When hydrated oxides are
exposed to a reduced environment

Press Ctrl+F to call the find & replace dialog. Enter "hydrated" in the search
for box and "hydrous" in the replace box. All instances of hydrated and Hydrated
are replaced with hydrous. It probably was the intention to have Hydrated
replaced by Hydrous, hydrated by hydrous, and I feel this should be the default
behaviour in a modern wordprocessor (perhaps not in a text editor). Currently,
this very common use of Search/replace can only be tackled safely using two runs.

Yes, this is a bear of a bug.

Put another way:

If "match case" is checked, Writer will find only case-matched items (e.g., a search on "hydrated" will not 
find "Hydrated"). If "match case" is not checked, Writer will replace with the case of the replace term (e.g., 
"hydrous" will replace "Hydrated").

MSWord will, IIRC, honor the case of the words being replaced as the default behavior, which is correct, 
IMO.
