You are expecting too much. As far as I know 100% exact import or Word files into Writer is not promised and in fact technically impossible to achieve, and actually meaningless as we after all are talking about two different applications with very different internal data structures. It's especially hard to get an exactly identical (automatic) division of a document into pages. I bet that even with Word itself you will get slightly different pagination if you have set the page sizes too "tight" and/or have different printers, for instance. Dear TML, I'm also a programmer from the Windows platform and switched my focus in 1998 to Linux development. I don' think I am expecting too much, but I understand your concern. I think that in fact, this one issue is THE main reason why most professionals who regularly use computers at work are refusing to adopt any version of Linux with much enthusiasm. There is a great wealth of apps out for Linux, so the old argument about the number of apps no longer applies. But if this problem can be resolved it will go a long way in helping corporate offices to adopt some flavor of Linux and to eventually drop Windows altogether. While other Word Processing software does exist for Linux, OO.o is by far the most popular one. So I think that there is a great deal of responsibility resting upon your (Sun's and the rest of the volunteers) shoulders. Many people have pointed out this flaw to me and have expressed great wrath over the layout changes. I know this is a tough problem to solve, but it is very worthwhile. Arthur Baldwin eengnerd, please attach the sample file to this issue so that we are able to reproduce and perhaps fix the issue. Otherwise we won't be able to do anything on this. Thanks for your patience. Created attachment 57243 [details]
This document has one extra partial page in OO.o
Here are two problems in the issue which lead to the fact that an extra page is generated in OOo Writer after import of the attached document. In this issue we will focus on the lines built by the underscore characters. For the wrong paragraph border below that I will file a new issue. MRU->FME: see the "lines" on page 19. these consist of underscore characters. In OO Writer they are displayed a little wider than in MS Word, so that a fourth line will be produced in Writer. |
