Description allaw 2002-12-07 06:55:33 UTC
I found that characters specialy operaters such as "+" in formulas are
displaye as boxes. I installed and reinstalled it but nothing has changed. I
deleted Opensymbol font and reinstalled it but got no result. It seems that
windows 98 displays the characters of Opensymbol as boxes. This what I noticed
when I viewed the font in "Character map utility". I don't have any problem
with Windows xp.

Sometimes on win98 the fonts are not registered correctly by the
system. Please try to reboot Win98 and the go to the Windows/Fonts
folder and doubleclick the OpenSymbol font. Then it should work (at
least this helped in several cases).

Your suggestion did not work. Opensymbol font can not be viewed in
windows 98 or ME. I doubled clicked on it after reboot, nothing but
empty boxes are displayed.

MRU->HDU: That's really true. The OpenSymbol font only displays small
boxes as characters under Win98.

W98/WME and unicode based symbol font are troublesome.
The CTL changes caused some regressions because the
more advanced API's needed for this are not correctly
supported on these OS. Looking for a workaround...

It is a P2 problem, when fonts do not work on some platforms.

I have encountered a similar problem with 1.1beta the details of which
could be of interest for resolving this issue:

Some fonts don´t show, i.e. they are not even replaced by boxes. This
happens with esp. "cdot" and "circ". The OOo history of my computer
(W98SE) could throw some light on your problem:

[1] 1.0.2 installed. No problems with math formula here (except pdf
exported formulas via ps and ghostcript showed black circles instead
of brackets and other fonts)

[2] 644_m4 installed for a few days. Installation process asked
whether to replace a certain font file: ???____.ttf (can´t quite
recall the name). I said not to replace. No problems with math formula
here either.

[3] 1.1b installed after deinstalling 644_m4. Installation process
again asked whether to replace the same (I think) font file. This time
I said yes. The described problem with cdot and circ appeared after
this, not only with 1.1b but also with 1.0.2.

Maybe this helps. Otherwise ignore.
