Sometimes when opening the Navigator for a Java source (I use Ctrl-7; normally
in sliding mode and so hidden), the tree is shown but entirely collapsed. I need
to expand the root node to see anything, which is annoying. At least the
top-level children should be initially expanded, and perhaps the whole tree.

Can't reproduce any more. Feel free to reopen if it is still the case in latest builds.
