It's possible to choose 'GlassFish V1' while registering new server instance, and then register GlassFish V2. Does it
mean it's just cosmetic change of available names?

Yes, cosmetic.
AS8.x, 9.0, 9.1 are all working for any of the picked choice.
Put more visibility about the choices...
You can see it as compatibility (backward and forward)
