I'm sorry if this is not the right venue for asking this question, but I've just spent the last 20 minutes wandering around your site trying to make sense of where to post, where to search, what to subscribe to, etc. - and I am at my wits end. I already have too much stuff to do and can't afford another hour of getting lost in your site. I know you do a lot of great work (for free, no less!) and I know it's a complex project, but can someone *please* look into making the site easier to use? (I'm pretty sure I've raised this issue before.) Another thing that makes this issue more serious (at least in my opinion) is that I have what I think must be a popular and easy concern and question - yet could not find the answer to it on your site; the point being that if I had some weird kind of issue I could understand it being difficult to find the answer to. Anyway, here's my "issue": I have and LOVE NetBeans 6.0. I've submitted a few bugs and have gotten email responses indicating that they've been fixed. So how do I incorporate the fixes? And, in general, how do I stay up to date with new improvements? I remember reading somewhere that NetBeans 6.1 takes advantage of the new features in Rails 2.0. I can find the 6.1 page, but before I download and install it I'd like to see some doc about it, e.g. Is it considered stable? Does it really provide more support for Rails 2.0? Is it a separate product from 6.0 or will it overwrite my existing installation? Do I even need 6.1 - can I just download some new Ruby/Rails plugin which will play more nicely with Rails 2.0? Good and simple example: I can't rename my .RHTML files to .ERB from within the IDE. I'm thinking that a NetBeans 6.1 and/or new Rails plugin will let me do that - but how the heck can I find out? Basically, I'm using NetBeans for Ruby on Rails development and want to know the best way to keep up to date with the latest and greatest developments, how risky new releases are considered to be (e.g. "we think it's pretty stable" vs. "run at your own risk" type assessments), and how to keep abreast of new developments. I know you can't spend time answering my questions with a lot of text; I'm hoping that you can just point me in the right direction. And to reiterate: can someone *please* simplify the site? I woke up ready and raring to "get at it" today, but spent my first 45 minutes just spinning my wheels on what should have been an easy issue to find out about and resolve. I'm sorry to complain. For what it's worth - and what you *don't* see - is that I spread the good word about your IDE to every Ruby on Rails (and Java) developers that I can. I don't know if that counts for anything; I just don't want you to think I'm some kind of ingrate who spends his life bitching and moaning about the hard work that others are so thoughtfully doing. Thanks, Larry
Hi Larry, Thank you for taking the time to write up and submit this bug. This is great feedback. First, to answer your questions about 6.1. We (the writers) are just finishing up the 6.0 docs. Our focus now will be on writing about how to get the various flavors of platforms and gems that came out in the last 30 days to work together. Then we will start working towards 6.1. As for the organization of the site, are you talking about the 'official' NetBeans IDE site (http://www.netbeans.org/kb/trails/ruby.html) or the NetBeans Ruby community wiki (http://wiki.netbeans.org/wiki/view/Ruby)? Regardless of which site, we would love to hear suggestions about how to simplify the site to meet your needs. Any concrete suggesions would be extremely valuable. Note that the wiki belongs to the community. See http://blogs.sun.com/divas/entry/how_do_you_rubh.
Requested clarification but never got it.
