Could NB documents that are intended for assisting as user guides, also be made available in printer friendly format, i.e., like the pdf format. Such a format enables easy reading once printed.
Switching bug to "usersguide" module. The online help is being written with the JavaHelp viewer's capabilities specifically in mind. In particular, it relies extensively on the navigators (TOC, index, and search) that come with JavaHelp and it is written in a concise style that would be much less effective in printed form. That said, it might be possible at one point to provide a print version of the online docs, converting the HTML to PDF, though that probably wouldn't look especially "professional". However, the focus of the docs team at the moment is to complete the online help (one or two updates will probably be provided through the NetBeans Update Center). And given the fact that JavaHelp 2.0 (due in the 4th quarter of 2001) is supposed to allow printing of multiple help pages (thus printing of the whole help set) with one command, the effort to provide a PDF doc might be superfluous. By the way, Forte for Java 1.0 had both a PDF "user's guide" and online help. These in fact were the same docs. However, it was our feeling that since they were written with both print and online versions in mind, the quality was compromised for both versions (i.e. the printed version didn't have enough detail, and the online version was awkward and it was too hard to find specific bits of information). So given our limited resources, we've decided to focus on providing high-quality online help. I'm closing this RFE as WONTFIX. If this is a very important issue to you, you might want to bring it up on nbui. Naturally, my initial response would probably be a repeat of what I've stated here. :-) -Patrick
