I installed the new NB 6.5 release on my Mac (OS/X 10.5, Intel Core Duo) with no problems, but also wanted to try out the new Python support. However, the Mac installer for this overwrote my standard NB installation, with no warning. Workaround: reinstalling standard NB 6.5 works, but should not be required. The installer for Linux (Ubuntu 8.1) does something similar but different -- it also overwrites my existing NB 6.5 installation, but this time seems to *add* the python project options to the original set, rather than replacing them. That is actually the behavior I would prefer (i.e. somehow package the python stuff as a plugin that can be added and removed, rather than only providing it as a standalone). At a minimum, though, it should be possible to install the Python stuff alongside an existing NB 6.5 installation, without corrupting it.
this should be a p2 to be fixed in python fcs milestone.
