The logs I am referring to are the ones you can view via:

    View > IDE Log

and which are logged in the directory: 

    .netbeans/{VERSION}/var/log/messages.log
    .netbeans/{VERSION}/var/log/messages.log.1
    .netbeans/{VERSION}/var/log/messages.log.2


An option to enable/disable would be welcome.

Start NetBeans with --nologging option and no messages.log files will be created.
You can add the option into etc/netbeans.conf file.
