Product Version = NetBeans IDE 8.0 (Build 201403101706)
Operating System = Mac OS X version 10.10.2 running on x86_64
Java; VM; Vendor = 1.7.0_45
Runtime = Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM 24.45-b08

attempting to perform the upgrade requested when I started netbeans:  

RCP Platform     Auto Update Services [1.45.3 -> 1.47.2] 

resulted in dialog box:  unable to connect to update server.   Internet connectivity is fine and I can download the update from the URL but not install it.

The attached log file shows a problem with the connection to updates.netbeans.org. Could you please test the connection from the IDE via menu Tools -> Plugins -> Settings (Tab) -> Proxy Settings (Button) -> Test connection (Button)? Please, try to play with with proxy settings a little bit if the test failed. The successful test should look like the dialog from the attachment.

good catch.   Proxy settings pointed to localhost (doing web development locally via MAMP).   Removed the proxy setting and the update worked.   Thank you.  This issue can be closed as resolved.
