Start IDE.
Create new Web Application.
Deploy it on Sun Java Application Server.
Switch to runtime tab.
Select deployed app under Servers->Sun Java Application Server->Web Applications.
Open properties window.
Click on Deployment descriptor property ellipsis button.
The deployment descriptor shows in single line without caret returns and formatting

we are moving away from property editors in the future. we need to make sure we
remember this issue, if we expose the deployment descriptor of deployed components.
