Operating System        = Windows XP version 5.1 running on x86
Java; VM; Vendor; Home  = 1.5.0_05; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 1.5.0_05-b05; Sun
Microsystems Inc.; d:\Java\jdk1.5.0_05

Steps:
1. Invoke "CVS | Checkout ..." action from main menu. 
2. Use ":pserver:anoncvs@netbeans.org:/cvs" for cvsroot.
3. Setup "javacvs" module.

Exception is thrown while searching for projects.

You need to have checked out also at least nbbuild and openide modules to be
able to work with nb-cvs module. So check them out first. Maybe there could be a
message giving you more clues. Up to owner ;)

Ok, but if some one checked out only some other module, then he/she wouldn't
expect the AssertionError.

Will just improve it to show this exception as error text in the Open Project
dialog, which should be a bit more polite.
