It will be nice to have filters, or other solutions to enhance the editor and it's usability. As usual there could be a number of solutions, but here is some suggestion.. It will be good to have to be able to selectively view the BPEL, something like I select a bit of the bpel canvas and say I am interested in this part, and it somehow zooms into it and shows only those that are relevant to that part of the BPEL and things that are related to that part of the BPEL. I filed this as P1 enhancement, because when we start to view real world BPELs, our editor will soon see itself in a non-scalable position. With that it's effectiveness in capturing BPEL users will take a down turn.
retitling this to reflect the specific suggestion. There are already other features being added to improve large diagram usability. I beleive the feature requested here is a sweep and zoom combination. I have seen some other tools with this type of feature and it is nice. At this time, I would like to evaluate the other improvements we do have planned and not try to do everything. If we can satisfy the usability concerns without this feature it would be nice. The difficulty of this feature is the complexity that is implied by the "shows only those that are relevant to that part of the BPEL and things that are related to that part of the BPEL". This is not easy and it raises issues about the workflow that follows such a "reduction" in the diagram (i.e. debug, navigator view, etc). It would possibly require yet another mode and this is generally not good practice.
Downgrading this until we evaluate whether other planned features will suffice.
Is it the same? http://www.netbeans.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=88950 (Diagarm Pan and Zoom navigation control)
sounds similar to my suggestion. Although i mentioned that the relevant stuff will be shown. Meaning the partnerlinks or somethings like that, or for instance if the user is zoomed into a scope, then only those elements that can be created or dropped should be allowable. In short context of the user actions also changes with the panning. But please bear in mind this is only a suggestion. Not a solid idea that has proven to be great. This suggestion is made, (or bug was created) so that the editor folks start their designs with really huge BPELs in mind and try to solve how to simplify navigation in those.
It's not similar to the thumbnail view. And will not be implemented in upcoming release.
