Currently, when more and more people start to use NetBeans Platform for building standalone applications (not directly IDE plugins) the category name "NetBeans Plug-in Modules" in New Project wizard is rather misleading. Changing it to "NetBeans Platform Modules" would make it more appropriate.
Would then be equally misleading for people writing plug-ins for the IDE, so I don't think we would want to do that. BTW UI spec is here: http://wiki.netbeans.org/wiki/view/NewProjectWizard
I guess people writing plugins for NetBeans know what NetBeans Platform is. BTW. the icon associated with such projects won't change - this can also help. In NetBeans 6.0 many menus are changed, and this is not considered to be confusing. I think "NetBeans Platform modules" name is just more general and fits better to their usage (because you can build standalone application on NB Platform, and this is not a "plug-in" in common sense). This is not crucial, so I won't reopen the issue; though, i still believe the "NetBeans Platform modules" is a better name.
No strong opinion, Jano can comment if he wants.
I think majority of users would want to write *plugins* into the *IDE*. When using NB as a platform, there's more issues than just the category name. For example knowing that Module Suite is a way to develop an application built on top of the platform isn't really obvious. We started using the word plugin on nb.org (Plugin portal) and in the IDE (Tools | Plugins). So removing the Plugin word from the New Project wizard can cause problems on the plugin front.
