Profiler 070327 NetBeans IDE Dev (Build 200703272330) 1.6.0; Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM 1.6.0-b105 Windows XP version 5.1 running on x86 ru_RU (nb); Cp1251 Steps to reproduce: - Run some profiling that produces some results - Stop it - RESULT: Live Results button in Profiler Control Panel is disabled. However, both Profiler > View > Live Results and Window > Profiler > Live Results are enabled and open Live Results window which, if was opened during profiling session (and even closed), shows the last available data.
This is intention, not a bug. Whereas Profiler -> View or Window -> Profiling menus provide "shortcuts" to all Profiler windows, Control Panel provides actions useful for managing and controlling profiling session. If Live Results window is not opened during profiling, it's not being updated and in fact no profiling results are being sent from agent to the tool. Thus it's not useful to open Live Results after profiling is stopped - no data would be shown.
On the other hand, if Live Results window was opened during profiling, it was being updated and profiling results were being sent from agent to the tool. Thus it could be useful to open Live Results after profiling is stopped - the last data would be shown. Therefore there is a UI inconsistency. Live Results button is disabled while results are available.
If Live Results was opened during profiling for a while and then closed, data were not updated since then. If Live Results button was enabled after profiling, the user could get the feeling that he'll see the last data obtained before profiling session finished, not the last data before closing Live Results. I think that would be a real problem, IMHO current approach is perfect solution avoiding such problems.
However, since the window could be opened using Profiler and Window menus, and it will show some data to the user, he/she could get a feeling that this data is up-to-date. Probably, another issue should be filed about the fact the there is no indication whether the data in live results is up-to-date.
