Description bobharvey 2005-01-10 14:26:30 UTC
I'm putting this in 'framework' because I suspect that spreadsheet displays will
want it too, otherise it's a word processor thingy.

There appears to be no facility for vertical justification of text on the
printed page - that is alignment on a page-to-page basis of both the top of the
top line and the base of the bottom lines of text on pages.

Our great rival has done this since W97, and even old-fashioned Wordstart 7 did
it if my memory serves me right.

In printing we used to do this byadjusting the 'leading' down the page - either
in points at paragraph gaps, or fractions of points on the way down.

TM->SBA: Looks more like a writer- or printing-issue than a framework problem to
me, please have a look !

HI->bobharvey: Sorry but I'm not familiar with word. Could you please attach a
screenshot to make visible what you mean. Thanks.

bobharvey->HI
What a curious request. I'd have expected anyone with a working knowledge of
Typography to be familiar with Vertical Justification. It's the way most books
are produced. The line spacing ("leading") is modified so that the baseline of
the bottom line of every page is in precisely the same place.

Yhis is not just yet another request for alavish duplication of an msword
feature - in fact the ms implimentation is simplistic. However, I will attach
what you ask for.

You see what I mean about the word version being simplistic? I'm sure that Tex
etc. does it better - working across pages for a start.

I am not sure this is a printing issue, but I don't know how demarkation is done
in the project. I know it ought to apply to the whole suite.

There is a concise definition in http://www.coraldigital.co.uk/dtp/glossary.htm
. Googling gives many others.
Comment 11 lohmaier 2005-02-17 23:12:54 UTC
Most (all?) books do not use vertical justification in the sense of "put the
first line on the top of the page and space the differnt paragaphs so that the
last line will be at the very bottom of the page".

If you really have such a book, please name it.

What you're probably looking for ist Registerhaltigkeit (Register-true).

see http://www.janaszek.de/t/registerhaltigkeit.htm

the image shows a text with register-true not present.

OOo already has this feature: Format|Page -> (o) Register-true

HI->bobharvey:
Saddle down dude. Believe me there is a life without MS-Word.
You must know if you would give a better description, then we would know that
this is not a printing issue and I have not to ask unnecessary questions.
I'll pass you to the right hands for this kind of issues.

This is a duplicate to issue 20386. Though that one is about verttcally
centering, vertically justifying will also be implemented by this.
