Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 115683
calc imports scientific notation as text
Last modified: 2010-11-23 16:39:59 UTC
I have a .csv file with data columns. Some of the data are in scientific notation. 1.2345e-08 (lower case e) These cells are all imported as text, so they don't sort properly. If I tell the import to detect special numbers, then it works. It was not obvious to me that scientific notation was a special number. This seems like a design flaw for which I can imagine different possible solutions. I don't know anyone who regularly works with scientific notation who considers them special numbers. A quick fix would be to show examples of common special numbers next to that dialogue option, or even have a help entry that discusses "special numbers" and what is meant by that option. I was unable to find one.
Created attachment 75064 [details] .csv file (actually tab delimited, but same result) used for import
I'm using version 3.2.0.10
In the import dialog set the column type of those columns to "US English". In the upcoming OOo3.3 you will be able to select the import locale for the entire document.
Closing.
