PDF too heavy to render on PC

Open the attached PPT file in Impress (Version 3.3).
Export this PPT to PDF.

PDF is too heavy to render whereas it was OK with the older version of Openoffice. Tested with Open office 3.1.

While the PDF do render on my machine there seems to be a significant change in performance between PDFs created on 3.1 and 3.3.

I tested on Windows7 64bit, 8GB RAM, Intel Core2 Q6600 2,4GHz.
Using Adobe Reader 9.4.4.

Replication steps:

1. Open the example PPT file.
2. Select "Export as PDF..." from the File menu.
3. Accept the default settings by clicking "Export".
4. Open the PDF in Adobe Reader and go through the presentation.

I repeated this procedure for versions 3.1, 3.3 and 3.4.(OOoDEV300_m106).

I noticed two things:
1. Converting to PDF was a lot quicker when using 3.1 than the two other versions.
2. When browsing through the PDF created with 3.3 or later it took considerably longer time to display the slides than it did for the PDF created with 3.1.

Results:

 OOo 3.1.0

   Approx 4 seconds to convert to PDF.
   Next slide is displayed almost immediately.

 OOo 3.3.0

   Approx 14 seconds 10 convert to PDF.
   Next slide is displayed after approximately 3 seconds.

 OOo 3.4.0 (OOoDEV300_m106)

   Approx 14 seconds 10 convert to PDF.
   Next slide is displayed after approximately 3 seconds.

Three seconds might not sound as much but it is very noticeable when quickly browsing through the slides. Waiting 3-4 seconds before going to the next slide yields a better experience as the the next slide is then loaded in the background.

I would like to have a closer look at the default settings for exporting to PDF to see if I can identify any major changes in this area but unfortunately version 3.1 was removed when I installed 3.3 and I do not have the install files.

(Mark Fioravanti, 09/25/2011). I was able to replicate the issue and noticed a an additional difference. There is a difference in the file size PDFs that are generated by Impress.

Impress 3.1.0, OOO310m11 (Build:9399) generates a PDF of 1,652 KB in size.
Impress 3.3.0, OOO330m20 (Build:9567) generates a PDF of 3,174 KB in size.
Impress 3.4.0, DEV300m106 (Build:9582) generates a PDF of 3,175 KB in size.

Steps to replicate;
1. Launch OpenOffice Impress
2. Main Menu > File > Open... > Select the sunimages.ppt file.
3. Main Menu > Export as PDF...
4. Accept Default Options, click Export.
5. Enter file name of PDF. (Used sunimages-OOO3.1.pdf, sunimages-OOO3.3.pdf, and sunimages-DEV3.4.pdf).

The default 'PDF Options' for all three versions of OpenOffice.org Impress were the same.

I tested this on Windows 7 (Ultimate 64-bit) SP1 with patches current to 09/25/11, 2 GB RAM, with an Intel CORE i7 CPU. Only minimal additional software was installed on the test machine; OpenOffice.org 3.1.0, OpenOffice.org 3.3.0, OpenOffice 3.4 Development, Anti-Virus (Avira), and Java Runtime Environment 1.6 update 26 (32 and 64 bit version) and the PDF readers. The resulting PDF was tested in Adobe Reader 9.4.6 (, Adobe Reader X (10.1.1) and FoxIT Reader (5.0.2.0718)

I recorded the following notes;

OpenOffice.org 3.1.0 OOO310m11 (Build:9399)
It took 5 seconds to export as a PDF. The sunimages-OOO3.1.pdf had a file size of 1,652 KB.

When opening the PDF it took;
2 seconds in FoxIt Reader (v5.0.2.0718),
2 seconds in Adobe Reader 9.4 (v9.4.6),
1 second in Adobe Reader X (v10.1.1)

OpenOffice.org 3.3.0 OOO330m20 (Build:9567)
It took 11 seconds to export as a PDF. The sunimages-OOO3.3.pdf had a file size: 3,174 KB.

When opening the PDF it took;
1 second in FoxIT Reader (v5.0.2.0718),
4 seconds in Adobe Reader (v9.4.6),
2 seconds in Adobe Reader X (v10.1.1)

OpenOffice.org 3.4.0 DEV300m106 (Build:9582)
It took 12 seconds to to export as a PDF. The sunimages-DEV3.4.pdf had a file size of 3,175 KB.

When opening the PDF it took;
1 second in FoxIT Reader (v5.0.2.0718)
2 seconds in Adobe Reader (v9.4.6)
2 seconds in Adobe Reader X (v10.1.1)

this issue is no P1
Comment 4 Jim Warchol 2012-06-10 04:04:25 UTC
I was NOT able to replicate this bug using on my Mac using the following:
Mac OS X 10.6.8 2.66 GHz Intel Core Duo, 8 GB RAM
Using OO v3.4.0 AOO340m1(Build9590) Rev. 1325589
Using Adobe Reader 10.1.3

Steps to attempt to replicate:
1 - Open original PPT file (see original attachment) in Presentation
2 - Select Export as PDF (Use default settings)
3 - Select Export
4 - Open the PDF and go through the slides

It took approximately 4 seconds to render the PDF.
My PDF file size was 1.7 MB (compared to the original PPT file of 2.8 MB.
Scrolling through the PDF slides in almost instantaneous.

This issue possibly has been already resolved when OO was updated to v3.4, but it may require additional verification on other environments to confirm.

-----------

NOTE: I did see a potential unrelated error relating to how Presentation rendered the background image of the slides. Will check if that is reported elsewhere here.
