Description Rolf Eder 2012-05-16 09:37:17 UTC
Printing in AOO 3.4 takes ages compared to OOo 3.3.

Printing of a new doc in Writer oder Calc with one character inserted takes 5-10 seconds before it is queued. In 3.3 it was send immediately.

We are working with network printers and I can confirm this annoying behavior in Mac OS 10.7, WinXP and Win7. Current LibO is suffering the same.

Searching BZ I found the following issues which might be related:

win xp sp3 32bit to a Brother HL5250DN network printer.

Oliver,

how can I help to debug? We have approx 50 clients in our LAN and I have checked with five of them in the same subnet and different network printers (HP, Lexmark). On another client in a different subnet I had an USB attached HP showing the same problem. This issue stopped the roll-out of the current release in our company.

Did the print engine change between 3.3 and later releases?

And please note: I am talking about the delay between hitting the <Print> button and the print job actually being queued. It does not matter wether I use the Default Print button in the symbol bar or the print dialogue itself. It always takes at least 5-10 seconds until it hits the queue. And it is not related to the size or content of the doc.

Tx
Rolf

I cannot reproduce it.

@Rolf Eder: Printing performance mostly depends on what is being printed. Can you reproduce this issue with a document with no confidential information that could be attached to this bugs, so that we can test with this document?

as mentioned above, i can not find a difference between oo32 and aoo34.
i create a new writer document, type "test", open "print dialog" and hit "print". printing will start about 2 or 3 seconds later

Ariel,

no special doc needed. I made two screencasts: First AOO34, then purged the install, installed OOo33 and repeated the case 5 minutes later. Same machine, same printer, huge difference. The printer is online, no sleep mode, ...

I can reproduce the issue with a vanilla Win7 install and even on a WinXP machine. I checked with several PC and network printers: All showed this effect. I also tried the current LibO release: same behavior as AOO34.

OOo33 is printing at once, later releases have this 10 second delay.

The screencasts are in QuickTime Format:

I see. The visible side of the issue seems to be that the "Drucken" dialog remains open (maybe waiting for something) even thought the page has been prepared.

I tested on Linux Fedora 16 - 64 bits with a network printer, "test" text, direct printing from the toolbar icon (just like in your screencasts), and it prints so fast that I can't even see the dialog.

Let's see if someone else is able to reproduce this bug.

Ariel,

I double-checked this issue and it seems to be Mac OS specific. Sorry, I messed with my zoo of VMs and real machines:

Several Linux flavors don't show this issue.
WinXP (32-bit) and Win7 (64-bit) don't do either.
Mac OS 10.5.8 (32-bit) is OK too.
Mac OS 10.7.4 (32- & 64-bit) have this issue.

I will check with a 10.6.x machine later.

As LibO is suffering too, it seems some common code after the final 3.3 release is missing or broken or something else is behaving different in later CUPS environments on the Apple side of life.

The spool files in current Mac OS are delayed written to /private/var/spool/cups/

I corrected the issue to this platform. The release 10.7 its still missing in the list box.
