Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 122943
Crash when sort whole Writer text document
Last modified: 2017-05-20 10:14:59 UTC
This has only started after the update to 4.0.0
NOT Reproducible with "AOO 4.0.0-Dev – German UI / German locale [AOO400m3(Build:9702) - Rev. 1503704 2013-07-16 14:54:56 (Di, 16 Jul 2013)]" on German German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", Common 4.0-dev User Profile: I used an arbitrary table > 20 rows, 4 columns an did 20 sorts using different keys, sort order, ..., no crash during 10 sorts. @over50: Unfortunatley you description is much too rare. We need a step by step instruction how to reproduce your problem due to <http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/HowToFileIssue> The crash happens when you sort table rows?
Hi Rainer I am not sorting tables. I have text documents in which most lines are full of text and most documents are hundreds of lines long. Some may be thousands of lines long. I do 'control a' to block the entire document and sort the whole document. Prior to the new version this never failed. Immediately after the new version, it fails at least once every time I get on my PC. On average it fails every 3 to 8 sorts. Writer crashes and I restart it and recover everything back to my last save. The content of the documents are irrelevant. It is just numbers, letters and spaces. This same problem used to happen on an earlier version and an update fixed the problem. That was quite a while ago now. Thanks for looking into this issue. OBSOLETE due to comment before @over50 As I told: we need an instruction how to reproduce the problem (with a sample document), a simple description what you observe is not useful. Currently I even do not understand how you sort a text document. But because problem seems to be solved for you I close this bug for now. Please feel free to reopen if the problem reappears for you and if you can contribute requested additional information Similar to here <https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=122723#c0>, for example)
Hi Rainer I have created a test document which crashed Writer the first time I tried to sort it. If you use this test document and sort it all by control 'a' and then Tools, Sort without specifying any special sort requirements it should crash Writer at least one out of every 10 sorts. Thanks. Created attachment 81293 [details] Test file to crash Writer when sorting whole document
NOT Reproducible with "AOO 4.0.0 – German UI / German locale [AOO400m3(Build:9702) - Rev. 1503704 2013-07-16 14:54:56 (Di, 16 Jul 2013)]" on German German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", Common 4.0-dev User Profile: 1. open reporter's sample document from AOO Start Center 2. <control+a> to select all text 3. Menu 'Tools -> Options -> Sort' I tried 5 times, always after having newly reopened the document, ascending / descending / other. AOO will need 15s or so, then the text will be sorted. Afterwards I did 15 additional sorts without closing, only doing smaller changes in the sort dialog for every sort. No crash!
Hi Rainer Thanks for trying. I think we have done all we can. There is definitely a bug, but it is proving hard to reproduce at your end for some reason. I think we should close off this request. Hi Rainer I had a theory that the problem may be related to the speed of the steps. So, I have deliberately slowed down and waited between steps and the problem has not reoccurred. I have not pinned down which 2 steps conflict if too close together, but I am fairly sure that this may where the problem is. John
> I had a theory that the problem may be related to the speed of the steps Absolutely possible! I will do some more tests tomorrow.
Hi Rainer I have not had time yet to do my own tests on exactly which 2 steps are going too quickly and triggering the crash. Unless I really concentrate to slow all the steps right down, I am still getting lots of crashes now. I was wondering whether you had had a chance to do any testing on this? Also, I use Microsoft Word at work and use similar documents and sort them in the same way. With Word I never have had this problem. So it is something in Writer that is not in Word that can't cope with the speed of these steps. Thanks. John (In reply to Rainer Bielefeld from comment #10) > > I had a theory that the problem may be related to the speed of the steps > > Absolutely possible! I will do some more tests tomorrow.
Hi Rainer Through continued use of Writer I am now convinced that it is NOT just a speed of steps issue, and may have nothing to do with step speed. I am noticing that I go through long periods with no crashes and then experience a short period with several crashes. When it is not crashing I have sped my steps up to max and not triggered crashes. When it is crashing I have slowed all my steps down and it still crashes. I have no firm theory now as to a possible cause, but I wonder whether some storage area might be blowing its max storage limit or something. John

From 10 Sep to 5 Oct I had 20 crashes. Then mysteriously after 5 Oct no more so far. I am not yet assuming they won't resume, but I wonder if something has changed either in Open Office or elsewhere on my PC to stop the crashes after 5 Oct? John
Further update: still no crashes since 5 Oct 13 - amazing and mysterious - no idea why the crashes have stopped. This same thing happened a long time ago when a significant update was made to Open Office. It is as if Open Office eventually learns to avoid the problem.
