Description Rhonda Kovac 2013-08-10 18:59:52 UTC
The upgrade to OO 4.0 from OO 3.4 was blocked by a message stating that QuickStarter needed to be cleared first. I couldn't figure out how to do that. I saw no icon for it in the Windows Task Tray. In Windows Task Manager, Quickstarter does not appear as an Application, Process, or Service. It wasn't listed in MSConfig as a Startup Option. It wasn't on the Windows Control Panel list of programs which can be uninstalled. (I even tried uninstalling all of OO 3.4 here, but was blocked from doing so by the same message).

There is a checkbox in OO 3.4 preferences (Tools, Options, OpenOffice, Memory) for enabling/disabling Quickstarter. But clearing that checkbox doesn't get rid of that upgrade message, even after reboot.

The only thing that worked was to log on as Administrator and manually delete the QuickStarter executable (C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice\Programs\QuickStarter.exe), reboot, then run the upgrade install again.

I don't know if I missed something, or if other users are encountering the same frustrating problem. But perhaps this information will help. I couldn't find prior documentation of this problem.

(In general, thanks so much for OO!)

Did you install 4.0 while 3.4 in background?
Was remove old versions option in 4.0 install unchecked?

A step by step to reproduce will be helpful.

Info by email:
"In answer to your question: I can't recall if, on my very first attempt to install the upgrade, I had been running OO at the time. I do remember that the first thing I did in response to the blocking error message was to check for and close out anything I might have been running in OO, including trying to find out if and where QuickStarter was running in the background, and close that out, too.

After each change I made--closing out OO (if indeed that needed to be done), attempting to disable QuickStarter in OO options/preferences, attempting to uninstall manually OO 3.4 first entirely independently before running the OO 4.0 upgrade--I rebooted and then (very first thing, without opening OO or doing anything else) re-ran the upgrade. On each upgrade run-through, I made sure to check the "remove old versions" option checkbox.

None of these go-arounds stopped the blocking message until I deleted the QuickStarter executable in the C:\Program Files (x86)\OpenOffice\Programs folder.

FYI: An additional fact I just remembered: My antivirus (Norton Security Suite) was NOT disabled during all this."

Not reproducible.
