I checked with "AOO 4.0.1   – German UI / German locale  [Rev. 1524958 2013-09-20 11:40:29]" on  German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", “historic”  4.0  User Profile used for all  predecessor versions:

Exactly identical "Help-About" info
Exactly same size size of installation.exe

If it's expected and intended that RC3 becomes Release (I am pretty sure), there should be a hint in the Release notes like "AOO 4.0.1 public Release is bit by bit identical with  4.0.1 RC3, early testers do not need to install the official release if they already have installed RC3".
I just uninstalled RC3 and installed Release, only to see that they are identical.

I would have done the addition (with a hint on dev-list for confirmation that my assumption is correct), but I can't edit cwiki because of Bug 123435.

This is not stuff for the release notes, since the release notes are for the generic public and we don't want to mix generic information with information that is only relevant to active community members (we don't even publish links to the installation files during the RC phase).

Of course, it still makes a lot of sense to send a note to the dev and the qa lists to confirm that RC3 has become the official 4.0.1 (though one should understand it by following the VOTE threads).
