Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 123830
Particular.doc fails to open with Error Message "not a WinWord97 file"
Last modified: 2018-01-20 17:05:12 UTC
When I try to open a .doc or .docx file I get the message: Read Error This is not a WinWord97 file. I don't know why I get this error message, as the file was created with Word.
Please attach a docx you can not open.
Created attachment 82072 [details] Sample Document
Thank you. Can not open with Writer, Calligra Words, abiword. AOO410m1(Build:9750) - Rev. 1548193 2013-12-07_04:10:48 - Rev. 1548790 Debian
That's a .doc!
Currently the only Software what is able to open reporter's sample document is SoftMaker FreeOffice. Also MS WORD Viewer is unable, will hang. "AOO 4.1.0-Dev – English UI / English locale - [AOO410m1(Build:9750) - Rev. 1546757 - 2013-12-02]" on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", own separate user profile fails to open reporter's sample with Error Message "Read-Error. This is not a WinWord97 file. Some more research required. @ SD Stone: Does any software on your PC open that document? @Edwin: If no software at all is able to open a particular document, isn't that an indication that something might be wrong with the document?
Created attachment 82078 [details] I can't open this file.
(In reply to SD Stone from comment #6) > Created attachment 82078 [details] > I can't open this file. Opens OK in Writer.
> @Edwin: > If no software at all is able to open a particular document, isn't that an > indication that something might be wrong with the document? Only if Word also fails, but I'm with Linux machine with no MS Office access at the moment...
Comment on attachment 82078 [details] I can't open this file. Opens fine with "AOO 4.0.1 – German UI / German locale [Rev. 1524958 2013-09-20 11:40:29]" on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", “historic” 4.0 User Profile used for all predecessor versions I can't see any relation to sample document of original report
Additional info: ---------------- I did some tests with original sample document. (a) already reproducible with * server installation of " AOO 4.0.0-Dev – English UI / German locale [AOO400m1(Build:9700) - Rev. 1457992 – Rev.1457606 ((2013-03-19))]" on German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit)", own separate user profile * server installation of OOo 3.3.0 (b) still opened fine with * Ooo 3.1.1 German WIN7 Home Premium (64bit) DE [OOO310m19 (Build 9420)]"! * OOo 2.0.2 (c) also opens fine with LibO 4.1.3 (d) Already reproducible with Pre-3.4.0 (OOo 3.3.0), but because of crippled Version selector (Bug 123063) no useful info can be contributed (e) Latest confirmation for AOO 4.1.0-dev, but because of incomplete LCo selector (Bug 123063) no correct information can be contributed. (f) Might be related to "Bug 119304 - Documents written in OO-Writer, Save as word 6, fail to re-open " or "Bug 118119 - Read Error no a WinWord97 file" or similar Some more research required
(g) Version of appearance seens to show relation to "Bug 119304 - Documents written in OO-Writer, Save as word 6, fail to re-ope" (h) Error Message also for all sample documents of "Bug 33011 - crash while loading Particular.DOC"
adjusting version field due to comment #10 I can also confirm this issue in OOo 3.0.0 (hang) and OOo 3.3.0 Microsoft's Binary File Format Validator also reports that the given document does not conform
