Libjpeg should be updated because JPEG 9 has some nice features and enhancements, such as JFIF 2 support, more bit depths, better color conversion and also fixes a couple of problems. See http://www.infai.org/jpeg/ for all details.

This is still a valid issue, we use jpeg-8d when not using system jpeg.
