Description DAVE 2014-08-08 23:39:21 UTC
JUST UPGRADED FROM 4.0.1 TO 4.1.0

I CAN OPEN A CALC DOCUMENT AND IT DISPLAYS AND CLOSES PROPERLY--BUT MAKE ONE ENTRY--EVEN A SINGLE DIGIT IN AN EMPTY CELL AND IT WILL NOT CLOSE NOR CAN YOU EXIT--DO A 3 FINGER SALUTE AND QUIT THE SOFFICE BIN PROCESS AND ITS GONE FROM THE DESKTOP.

OF COURSE WHEN YOU DO THAT AND REOPEN EVEN THE GENERAL OPEN OFFICE SHORTCUT OR ANY OTHER OPEN OFFICE DOCUMENT YOU GO THROUGH THE RECOVERY PROCESS FOR THAT SPREADSHEET THAT WONT CLOSE--WHEN AND IF IT DOES RECOVER --AND PROVIDED YOU MAKE NO ENTRIES-- IT WILL CLOSE NORMALLY.

WHEN I SAY WONT CLOSE--I MEAN-- FOR MINUTES ---OR HOURS.

CAN THE 4.1 BE REMOVED AND THE 4.0.1 REINSTALLED ?? OR AM I MISSING A SIMPLE FIX?

Does this happen with a particular document, or with any Calc document?
If the first, can you attach that particular document in this report?

Yes. Just download 4.0.1 again, and remove 4.1

Q--Does this happen with a particular document, or with any Calc document?
A--All calc documents

Thanks for the response.

I did send the document on this machine to another running the 4.0.1 version and it opens and closes ok there---and you can make entries and modify it and close it there normally too. ergo--it must be the new version installed on the machine I was working with when the problem began.

As to what was happening precisely when the freezes began--I am pretty sure it was while formatting the background in a single cell from light red to light green or vice versa right after making a dollar entry in another cell--that particular entry had updated the other cell values so at least that part of the posting went well.

As to the microsoft error reporting seen--content follows--
C:\DOCUME~1\Coleman\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERdf9a.dir00\soffice.bin.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Coleman\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERdf9a.dir00\appcompat.txt
szAppName : soffice.bin szAppVer : 4.0.9764.500 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

Note the app version "4.0.9764.500" mentioned above ---it would appear something might be left over from the previous open office install--- or-- does this number apply to what would be found in the 4.1.0 version of open office now?

I WENT BACK TO EARLIER VERSION OF 4--SLIGHT IMPROVEMENT BUT NO CIGAR--REMOVED THAT AND WENT BACK TO VERSION 3.4 AND AM BACK IN BUSINESS.

I DID NOTICE A COUPLE TIMES --WHILE PLAYING WITH EARLIER VERSION 4--NOTICES --"OPENING IN READ ONLY MODE" OR "USE OPEN FOR EDITING"--IS THE GLITCH SOMETHING TO DO WITH WINDOW XP OPERATING SYSTEMS "PERMISSIONS" OR A FILE BEING "LOCKED" BY THE OPEN OFFICE CALC PROGRAM?

UNDER OPEN OFFICE MIGHT "LOCKING" OCCUR IF A OOP DOCUMENT DID NOT CLOSE PROPERLY OR IF DOUBLE CLICKING TO OPEN WAS INTERPRETED AS AN INSTRUCTION TO OPEN 2 INSTANCES OF THE SAME DOCUMENT. EITHER MIGHT BE A FACTOR. IN EITHER CASE SUCH AN IMPROPERLY CLOSED OR DUPLICATE FILE IS NOT VISIBLE. OCCASIONALLY I WAS GETTING A "RECOVERY" NOTICE ON OPENING ANY OPEN OFFICE DOCUMENT--IT WOULD GIVE A FILENAME AND WHEN YOU CLICKED "NEXT" IT WOULD SAY IT COULD NOT LOCATE OR RECOVER IT AND PROCEED TO OPEN WHAT YOU WANTED TO OPEN IN THE FIRST PLACE.

WINDOWS IS PRETTY GOOD AT THROWING UP ROADBLOCKS TO ALTERNATIVES TO THEIR PRODUCTS----FOR EXAMPLE--WHEN VISITING THE OPEN OFFICE SITE EXPLORER "SECURITY" AUTOMATICALLY NOTIFIES ME--THIS SITE HAS "CERTIFICATE ERRORS" AND I WILL BE PROCEEDING ONLY AT GREAT PERIL IF I DO SO. NOVICES MIGHT TURN OUT THE LIGHTS, STAY IN THE BOTTOM OF THEIR FOXHOLE, AND WAIT FOR AT LEAST A FEW SECONDS AFTER THEY HIT THE "NEXT" BUTTON---AND THEN STICK THEIR HEAD UP.
