docx crashing OpenOffice 4.1.0 when opened in file explorer

I have had lot of crash problems with Win8.1 + OpenOffice 4.1.0. For example attached docx document cashes every time opening it from Windows file explorer via double click. HOWEVER, it does crash only when opening it in file explorer. If I start OO Writer first, and then open it from the menu, it works fine.

Don't reproduce with AOO 4.1.0 FR and Win7 x64 Pro.
Your file opens with no problem.

Did you try to reset your profile?

yep deleted the whole folder, but didn't affect anything. tried also reboot, etc., but same result. the file works if opened from oo writer menu, though.

never had these crash issues on Win7, so somehow this is related to Win8

I was not able to reproduce the described defect under Windows 8.1 Enterprise running in a VM using AOO 4.1.0
Comment 5 vgarciaambro2014 2014-09-23 00:24:06 UTC
I could reproduce this error on Windows 8.1 + Open Office 4.1.1.
Exactly same problem: only crashes if opened from Windows Explorer. Fresh install (Installed Open Office just to test this bug)

Additional information: I opened the doc via Writer menu and saved that document in both .doc and .odt. The new files now open fine, even via Windows Explorer.

Same problem here, OpenOffice Writer 4.1.0 using Windwos 8.1 Pro. If it matters, we are in a Canadian French environment.
Comment 8 Marc Beaudoin 2014-09-23 15:27:12 UTC
Both OpenOffice 4.1.0 and 4.1.1 seems to have the issue.

Replicating Bug -

Trying to replicate the bug, but was unable to do it.

I tried downloading a random .docx document and i tried to open. It opens without any issues on my Windows 7 Open Office 4.1.0. This bug could be related to windows 8.
I followed the same procedures but was unable to replicate the bug.
Comment 10 Marc Beaudoin 2014-10-14 13:47:19 UTC
It does not happen on every single file, but I am unable to pinpoint what kind of .docx files causes the crash.

Confirm that I have the same problem on Office Libre as well as Open Office, only on Windows 8 computers, and it happens even with native formats, created on other computers (like .odt); not only .doc and .docx formats. But it doesn't happen with every file; can't say exactly what are the defining characteristics of the problem files.

Obviously the problem involves Windows 8. Could it be that the way Explorer "hands off" a double-clicked file to OL is different in Windows 8?

Moreover, my experience is not that OO and OL crash exactly; an OO process opens, and goes on cranking without opening the file. If one closes this process via the Task Manager, the remaining Open Office processes (like other open documents) continue to function normally.

I solved this problem finally on my computer, using the "troubleshoot compatibility" option.

Navigate to soffice.exe.

right-click, select "troubleshoot compatibility"

Click "try recommended settings".

Windows does something.

Accept the changes.

Now I can open any file by clicking from explorer.

While there may still be a compatibility problem with OL and Windows 8, at least I am not suffering from it anymore.

Thanks.
