screen capture of blurry/shifted characters

On Mac OS X. Tested with 10.9.4 on a normal (non-retina) MacBook Pro and a Retina MacBook Pro.

As you edit text, especially highlighting text, the text surrounding the edits becomes more and more blurry and the characters start to shift and tear. This starts to happen almost immediately. Eventually the text becomes almost unreadable. Scrolling the window up and down restores the text to perfect crispness.

To reproduce: In OpenOffice, create a new text document. Type or paste in a block of text (say 20-30 lines). Then start highlighting parts of the text or editing the text.

Note: It was suggested on the OpenOffice forum that this was just an anti-aliasing artifact or just the usual blurry-text-on-the-screen. However, because the text in OpenOffice is normally perfectly sharp (especially on a Retina laptop), it is definitely not normal. Also, this affects both retina and non-retina Macs, so it is not just a retina issue.

This issue is very annoying. Because the text in OpenOffice normally looks so crisp, I find myself constantly scrolling up & down to fix the blurriness.

Please let me know if you need more information. I can also attach further screenshots if that would help. Thanks very much for looking at this! I love using OpenOffice and this is my only major complaint.

A different reproduce:

Open up a multi-page document in OpenOffice 4.1 or 4.1.1. Bring up the "Find" dialog and search for some text. Close the Find dialog, then simply scroll upwards in the main window. The screen will get completely messed up, drawing lots of crazy lines. I'll attach a screenshot.
