Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 125989
Sidebar without group highlighting
Last modified: 2015-02-19 14:33:59 UTC
Created attachment 84344 [details] Patch Groups of user interface elements within the sidebar are currently highlighted. This looks a little bit disturbing. Without group highlighting the sidebar much smoother and more compliant to current user interface designs. I supplied a patch attached to this bug report. The current sidebar is shown in "Screenshot without patch.ipg" attached to this bug report. With patch applied the result is shown in "Screenshot with patch.ipg". I'm able to test on Mac OS X only. The patch has to be retested on Mac OS X, but it has to be tested on Windows and Linux too.

Why do you think a visual indication of the group is not needed?
(In reply to Regina Henschel from comment #3) > Why do you think a visual indication of the group is not needed? The grouping is already visible by the positioning of the different controls. Looking at other modern applications most of them are designed as smooth as possible. Removing group highlighting is a proposal for facelifting the user interface. In addition to the sidebar there are other user interface elements which are looking ugly with group highlighting, e.g. toolbars (not fixed with the patch attached).
Agree, cleaner UI without the widget color different that the deck background. Context of the buttons alone is enough to organize each content panel.

I think I like the sidebar highlighting as it already is -- with the group highlighting. Just my .02.
Created attachment 84469 [details] Linux screenshots I tested the patch on Linux (on the AOO410 branch, corresponding to version 4.1.1, since I happened to have that one ready). Before and after screenshot attached (Linux 64-but, Italian, 4.1.1 left without the patch, right with the patch). The new one looks definitely more modern. By the way, welcome Thorsten, and thank you for your contributions!

I noticed only a single negative answer, but many approvals. I suggest testing on Windows and adding the patch to trunk now.
UI design is not always just about look. The active elements in the sidebar have a visible background to give the user a visual clue which icons are active an which are only illustrative. This prevents users from first having to move the mouse over an icon in order to discover if it is one or the other.
