Description Ken May 2017-01-17 11:08:11 UTC
When I create a new page style for page numbers (eg PageNumbers)and save the file in Microsoft doc format, the PageNumbers style goes missing in the saved document.

I cannot confirm a difference in page formatting between the 2 attached documents. They are the same document created in AOO 4.1.3 using a custom page style named Numbered Page.

The only difference is that in the .doc format document when you inspect the page styles you will not find a distinct style named Numbered Page. What you will see is that the definition of the page style default is different between the 2 documents. This is because in Microsoft Word page formatting applies to the entire document and not to individual pages. It is a difference in design philosophy between Microsoft Word and Apache OpenOffice Writer.

If you are seeing differences in the actual page formatting please attach a sample document in both odt and .doc format so that we can further diagnose if there is an actual bug.

This is the doc file. Note that it now has Default style, Convert1 style and Convert2 style.

It also appears that when a doc document is saved as odt, the doc document is changed, and a footer appears on pages that are un-numbered.

I can't give you more info. I have worked round the problem by working in odt format and then converting to doc format.
Comment 9 Keith N. McKenna 2017-03-18 19:02:26 UTC
I believe that we have gone as far as we can at this point. The problem as I see it is a core difference between the two formats as to how they treat page styles. In Microsoft's doc format you can only have one page style per document in odt format you can have multiple page styles.

My suggestion would be to work and save the document in odt format and then export to PDF format so that others can read it. If for some reason you have to convert to doc format I believe there is a way to get around the core problem by using sections. It can add a fair amount of (I believe unnecessary) complexity to the work flow.

I am going to close this as not an issue. If you want to further explore possible alternatives iwould refer you to either the user mailing list at mailto:users@openoffice.apache.org or the user forum at http://forum.openoffice.org/
