To reproduce glitch:
1) Copy from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_alphabet character ω (omega lowcase)
2) Paste into new Writer document
3) Select character in new document
4) Set font to Symbol and size to 96
5) Toggle on/off underscore for font
6) See how on each toggle cursor width shrinks

What do you see? 
Please provide: 
1) a sample document 
2) a screenshot for expected result

Confirmed with AOO 4.1.7 on Windows 7.
(Easy to reproduce with the given steps)

Something is weird with "Symbol" font at size 96. Changing to "OpenSymbol" fixes it.

Then you didn't follow the steps given above.

Select the character and toggle "underline" on and off.
