Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 128520
Spellcheck not working when opening RTF files
Last modified: 2023-02-04 08:03:18 UTC
When opening any RTF file, spellcheck and auto correct doesn't work. When opening an RTF file and saving it as an ODT and reopening the ODT file the spellcheck still not working. So, when opening RTF file and saving as an ODT file the RTF formant transitions from RTF to ODT.
Hi, spell check works for me with RTF or any other file. Have you checked if spell checking is working for you at all? Most of the times the cure for spell check problems is to rename the user profile.
Above I meant the AOO user profile, see: https://forum.openoffice.org//en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=107689
(In reply to Matthias Seidel from comment #2) > Above I meant the AOO user profile, see: > > https://forum.openoffice.org//en/forum/viewtopic.php?t=107689 Yes, spellcheck works fine when creating a new OpenOffice document. As for renaming user profile, I don't know what you mean. I just install the program today.
Renaming the profile is described in the link. But looking at your other issue, you have definitely more problems with your computer. You have several instances of OpenOffice running. Did you restart your computer?
Please provide a document where spell check doesn't work for you. Did you install OpenOffice for the first time on your computer or have you updated from an older version?
Created attachment 87111 [details] Copy from Notepad and the same copy from WordPad. First time installing OpenOffice. v4.1.12 I copied a log from WordPad and Pasted a few lines to Notepad so any code would be removed. Then, I copied the log from Notepad to Open Office Write. The Spellchecked works. Then, I copied the log again Stright from WordPad which copied the codes (Tabs, Line Spacing, Margins, ext. I didn't add any of that from WordPad. If I type anything after the past from WordPad the Spellcheck wouldn't underline any misspelled words at all. But, if I type anything above on what I just Copy and Paste from WordPad (above the redline in the picture) the AutoSpellcheck still worked.
Thank you for the picture that describes the problem, but what we would need is a real RTF document. Can you attach something like that?
Created attachment 87113 [details] rtd file I've done test on other .rtd files with the same results.
Created attachment 87114 [details] Typed for a while and then copy and paste from WordPad and spellcheck stopped from there.. Type from Writer and spell AutoSpellcheck is work fine. Copy and past from WordPad AutoSpellcheck stops working.
When I open Logs.rtf, I see that language is set at unknow. So spellchecker and autoCorrect can not work.
Don't reopen without posting additional information. As said before your RTF is malformed, so causing the behavior described. For this kind of question, please use our forum or mailing list: https://www.openoffice.org/support/#community-support

oooforum closed the issue because OpenOffice does not know the language it should use to check. Which might cause the Issue you experience. So it can not conduct any spell check. So AOO is working as expected. We try to keep user user request away from our developer Bug tracking system. so he closed the issue. However if this is a first install, it is strange why the Language setting is not set. Maybe we need to tweak the install routine? Also maybe instead of just go dysfunctional, AOO should maybe inform the user that spell checking is not working because AOO does not know what Language to use? @Paul - can you please check your default install checking if this resolves the issue for you? https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Writer_Guide/Choosing_language_settings If so we need to investigate how it can be that a default setting is unset. IMHO this should not happen. All the best Peter
Now I got it and thank you.
Your Welcome, However you are now in the development stream, and it would be nice if we could analyze this to the end. Did the Language configuration cause the trouble you had?
Yes, the language changes to "unknown" every time I copy and paste from WordPad or open a rtf file the language goes to "unknown". I selected all and change to English and Spell check started working again.
Fresh install of AOO (en-US) All settings under Tools - Options - Language Settings - Languages on "English (USA)". File "Logs.rtf" opened in Writer: 1. Status bar displays "Unknown" 2. after selecting all contents - Status bar displays "Multiple Languages" 3. change to "English (USA)" - red wavy lines appear 4. text deselected - Status bar display "English (USA)"
Created attachment 87136 [details] Open same file to another computer with different results. On the first computer it filled just one page and added a blank page. On computer 2 it pushed down 2 Tables to the second page and it change settings from showing 1 page to 2 pages side by side. Using the same file ran different form computer 1 to computer 2. This picture is from computer 2. Computer 1 shows it a little different.

I posted the last comment and attachment in the wrong Issue report.
If I create a new document Input some text in french (see that language set as it) Save as RTF format Close the document Open this RTF document See that language is still set as french Spellcheck and autocorrect works as intented. Tested with AOO 4.1.13 and Windows 10
The 4th line of the file provided by OP (rtd file - "Logs.rtf") starts with: \pard\sa200\sl276\slmult1\f0\fs22\lang9 According to Rich Text Format (RTF) specs \langN applies a language to a character. N is a number corresponding to a language. The "9" in \lang9 stands for English. Testing the .rtf file with 4.1.13 en-US \lang1 the Status Bar shows "Arabic" as language \lang9 "Unknown" \lang1025 "Arabic (Saudi Arabia)" With \lang1033 the Status Bar displays "English (USA)" as language. Spellcheck and auto correct do work. (Same effect if "lang9" is deleted).
