Apache OpenOffice (AOO) Bugzilla – Issue 13939
Support binary fields (like images) in OO.o database
Last modified: 2013-08-07 15:45:41 UTC
I can't get images to merge from a database into either a table or a frame. If I merge them into the document, they are WAY too large. In any event, I cannot switch from M$Word to OOo Writer until I have these feature enabled. Can these feature be enabled?
Additionally, and just as important, text merges only erratically into tables. If anyone would like screen shots (captures), I'll be happy to send them.
Hi Dr. Fox, Could you provide a sequence of steps to perform, for others to use to observe the issue you have described? It is possible to alter the size of the image, after it is placed into the document. To do this, click on the image once, then hover over one of the corner green points. Grab one of these corner green points with the mouse, and drag it to the resize the image. If a corner point is not used, the image will be resized in only the vertical or horizontal direction, depending upon which point is grabbed. If a corner point is used, the vertical to horizontal ratio of the image will stay intact. The frame can be resized in the same manner. I inserted an image into a frame, and I added text to the document to wrap around the outside of the frame. I did this on RH 9 Linux, running 1.1 beta. All worked as expected. The text flowed nicely around the frame, no matter how the frame size was altered. I will carry out more tests, if more data is added to this issue. Is the text behaviour a different issue, than the image issue? If so, a new issue should be submitted for it. The developers like to see just one issue described per issue number. This makes it easier to keep the status of each issue organized. Diane

Currently openOffice does not support binary fields (such as images) in databases. Would be a nice have to, but I don't know much about the effort of implemantation in database access.
A 3rd party program (AVImark) uses OLE automation to 'search and replace' text in both MS Word as well as OpenOffice 1.1 and StarOffice before using the word processor to print documents. Many of the users of the AVImark would like to change from MS Word but Word still does a better job when AVImark uses OLE to find and replace text in frames. The OLE method is as follows: "Find" to find text stings, then "Delete" to remove the text string from the document, and finally "InsertAfter" to insert the text or image that is to replace the text string. These methods work great, except “Find” doesn’t work to locate text strings in Oo1.1 that are in a tables or text box. This method does work with MS Word tables. In MS Word it also works in "text boxes" if you convert the text boxes to "frames." Star Office has not been tested. A fully functional demo of AVImark can be downloaded at avimark.com if further testing is needed.

change subcomponent to 'none'
This remains a defect in OOo 680_m22. Avimark is the largest selling veterinary software with over 6000 hospitals and probably more than 100,000 users. You can download a demo of Avimark here: http://www.avimark.com/Demo/dlavidemo.htm To change from word to ooo, go to Work With:Hospital Setup:System Choose the Documents tab, choose StarOffice/OpenOffice and change doc type to sxw. Set up a swx document. Go to a patient record, right-mouse click over almost any part of the screen, choose document and either print or print to screen. There are sample pictures--try merging a picture with <animal-pic> Set up a table and try merging variable fields like <first-name>, <last-name>, and or <animal>--in some cells the merge works, and in some cells it doesn't. If you put <animal-pic> in any cell, the merge fails. Contact me if you need any further instuctions. Thank you. Lawrence M. Fox, DVM
